Scholastic News Accepting Applications for Kid Reporters
New York, NY — August 2, 2011 — The Scholastic News Kids Press Corps®, a team of about 50 reporters ages 10 to 14, is accepting applications for new Kid Reporters for the 2011-2012 school year. Good writers with an interest in journalism can learn more about the program and the criteria for applying at www.scholastic.com/kidspress. Applications must be postmarked by October 11, 2011.
For the past ten years, Scholastic News Kid Reporters have covered current events and breaking local and national news stories, including reports about entertainment, sports, business, politics, the economy, the environment, education and books. Their stories and video reports are published online as well as in Scholastic News® and Junior Scholastic® classroom magazines. In the last year alone, Kid Reporters interviewed newsmakers including singer/songwriter Taylor Swift, Major League Baseball’s Robinson Cano, U. S. Representative John Lewis, Israeli President Shimon Peres, and author Jeff Kinney. The Kids Press Corps produced special reports on the Gulf oil spill and the Japan earthquake. In the coming year, the Kid Reporters will be on the 2012 campaign trail covering the debates, primaries and campaign stops of the presidential candidates.
"The Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, the country's largest and longest running student reporting program, provides an opportunity for kids who are interested in writing and journalism to gain real-world experience covering events, conducting interviews and working with an editor to publish quality reporting," said Dante A. Ciampaglia, Editor of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps. "Scholastic News also provides parents and teachers with a news resource for their children with reporting that is accessible, relevant and age-appropriate."
