Affordable, curriculum-connected content for teachers, engaging nonfiction for students

New York, NY – July 21, 2015
– Scholastic today announced new skill books and a new magazine designed to expose students to compelling, complex nonfiction texts and help them build skills in writing, science, and geography. Editors from the award-winning Scholastic classroom magazines, which include Scholastic News®, created the materials in response to requests from teachers for more engaging and up-to-date nonfiction focused in these subjects. Scholastic publishes 30 print and digital classroom magazines that reach nearly 25 million students annually. Learn more at www.scholastic.com/news.

“We spend a lot of time talking with teachers, and we’re always looking for new ways to provide them with materials that meet their curriculum needs while grabbing their students’ attention, always keeping affordability in mind,” said Hugh Roome, Executive Vice President and President, Scholastic Consumer and Professional Publishing. “The new skills books and magazine were built with the same expertise that teachers expect from Scholastic classroom magazines, providing the most up-to-date, exciting on-level nonfiction for their classrooms.”

The new offerings include:

Scholastic News Just Write!TM Skill Books for Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5 guide students through the process of writing their own informational texts. Highly engaging activities teach them essential writing skills, including how to research, take notes, write strong introductions, and organize paragraphs.

The workbooks include 32 pages of writing activities and tips, kid-friendly mentor texts, and step-by-step lesson plans that support rigorous state standards. Teachers can access online resources including teaching tips and answer keys, rubrics, and graphic organizers.

Scholastic News Science Reader: PlantsTM for Grade 1 and Grade 2 enriches plant science curriculum with seven engaging nonfiction articles that cover different aspects of plant science, such as plant form and function, and plant adaptations. The articles are paired with higher-order critical thinking questions, graphic organizers, and diagrams that inspire deeper thinking.

Scholastic News Science Reader: Amazing AnimalsTM for Grade 1 and Grade 2 enriches animal science curriculum with seven engaging nonfiction articles that cover different aspects of animal science, such as life cycles and adaptations. Geography SpinTM, a new magazine available in September 2015 for students in third through sixth grades, features kid-friendly current events articles that introduce and reinforce important geography concepts. The eight monthly issues help students build critical geography skills like reading a compass rose, reading a distance scale, understanding latitude and longitude, and more.

A Teacher’s Guide with each issue provides critical-thinking questions and extension activities that support the C3 Social Studies Standards and help students meet language arts standards. Geography Spin is only available as an add-on with a paid subscription to Scholastic News Grades 3, 4, or 5/6.
