Min Awards Scholastic News Online "Best of the Web" for Special Online Coverage of Election 2008

New York, NY — March 19, 2009 — Scholastic News®, America’s leading news source for kids, announced that Scholastic NewsOnline’s Countdown to Election 2008 web site won for special online coverage in the Best of the Web Awards. The annual min Awards recognizes online publishing excellence in journalism, marketing, and use of technology.

Countdown to Election 2008, which helped kids explore the electoral process through polls, games, and articles and interviews by the Scholastic Kids Press Corps, was a finalist in the special online coverage category along with TheStreet.com, InStyle.com, Sporting News and McGraw-Hill’s Record Reveals: Boston.

"As everyone knows, younger voters mobilized for this presidential election in record numbers. But Scholastic's creative and important coverage of the race prepared the next generation of voters to take their place in civic life," said Steve Smith, min's Digital Media Editor.

"In classic Scholastic fashion, this content was not just raw reporting—it was the building blocks for a teachable moment. This was a major news operation and educational project that only would have been possible with the immediacy and depth the Internet allows, married with the cross-platform reach and educational experience of the publisher."

The web site complemented the robust election coverage of Scholastic News (for students in grades 1-6) and Junior Scholastic® (grades 6-8), the classroom magazines which are published by Scholastic, (NASDAQ: SCHL) the global children’s publishing, education and media company.
